New Phoenix Sculpture unveiled at RSPB Saltholme had Steel Benders UK support

A striking new phoenix memorial sculpture, a powerful symbol of renewal and remembrance, has been installed at RSPB Saltholme.

The 5ft tall Phoenix Sculpture, which hangs in the walled garden, offers visitors a unique way to honour loved ones and contribute to the charity’s work and Teesside-based company Steel Benders UK are proud to have played a part.

Designed by Middlesbrough-based artist Andrew Mckeown and fabricated by Finkle Forge of Egton, the Phoenix is a beautiful piece that invites quiet reflection while also celebrating the region’s industrial heritage.

The sculpture’s distinctive wings were meticulously crafted by Steel Benders UK – the north’s largest steel bending, profiling and forming specialists – and is testament to local companies working together.

Meticulously crafted at SBUK, the Phoenix Sculpture at RSPB Saltholme.

The phoenix was created out of galvanised steel and corten steel for the flames below. The project has already secured significant community support, with all of the phoenix’s feathers now accounted for.

Purchased and engraved

Each feather can be purchased and engraved with a personal dedication, creating a lasting tribute, and start from £200. All money raised will be used to support the conservation work being carried out at RSPB Saltholme.

“We have been delighted by the positive response to the sculpture, and we are grateful to those people who have already ordered their feather,” said Chris Francis, nature reserve manager.

“The Phoenix Sculpture is a beautiful way for people to connect with nature and remember those who are no longer with us, while also supporting our vital conservation work.”

Steel Benders UK, with sites in Middlesbrough and Hartlepool, played a key role in bringing the sculpture to life by laser-cutting the intricate wings.

Thrilled

“Our team was thrilled to be involved in this project for RSPB Saltholme,” said Phil Anderson, Operations Director at Steel Benders UK.

“Finkle Forge sent over the drawings, and our skilled CAD team and laser cutters went to work on the 3mm mild steel and corten profiles.

“It’s always rewarding when our local expertise can help bring an artist’s vision to life, particularly for something that will mean so much to the community.”
